During Prohibition, the distillery's whisky was sold as medicine, which explains the appearance and presentation of the whiskies. In 1994, the distillery was awarded a Royal Warrant by King Charles III. He greatly appreciates Laphroaig's peaty single malt whisky and visits the distillery regularly. Laphroaig translates roughly as "the
