Cut in Mexico. Additional Information: Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic rock glass formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. Obsidian is extremely rich in silica (approximately 65 to 80 percent), has little water, and a chemical composition similar to rhyolite. Obsidian has a glassy luster.
