It was opened in 1913 for five stages and leads through the Alps to the Mediterranean to the Cote d'Azur, crossing 16 high alpine passes. moreNine of these passes are over 2,000 metres high, including the highest road pass in the Alps, the Col de l'Iseran at 2,770 metres. Over a length of approx. 700 kilometres, the route overcomes an altitude difference of 15,700 metres. It is one of the most beautiful routes in the world.
