The medal was to recognize the Navy and Marine Corps' participation in the China Relief Expedition during the Boxer Rebellion. Created on June 27th, 1908, the medal was awarded to Navy Sailors and Marine Corpsmen who performed military duty in China between the dates of May 24th, 1900 and May 17th, 1901.
