A marcasite heart is cut from a nodule rather than a solid block, so what you are holding is really a cross section: grey and blue grey ground, pale crystalline banding running through it, small metallic flecks that catch the light at certain angles, and on some pieces an open pocket lined with tiny sparkling crystals.
