Seventeenth Century Skull Ring Garnet Two small green paste stonesA rare seventeenth century gold mourning ring, the plain 18ct gold band engraved to the exterior with a memento mori skull, a potent symbol of mortality and the transience of earthly life. Such rings were commissioned to commemorate the deceased and were commonly distributed to family members and mourners at funerals during the seventeenth century. The interior bears the engraved inscription "G Nodes obt aet Feb 1683 4" Ring Size: J Weight: 3. 5 grams
