It is famous for feeding on the droppings of tree shrews and birds by luring them with a sugary exudate on the lid of its pitchers. The Kinabalu form of lowii tends to produce pitchers with interiors that are a bit more purple than other forms. Nepenthes lowii requires highland temperatures and high humidity to thrive. It needs very good drainage or is prone to rot
