Originally designed as as a fob to attach to the end of a pocket watch chain

and evolved to incorporate design elements of the Art Nouveau period as it developed

I'm not 100% sure

however on closer inspection the animals appear to be goats not deer

The basket hilted sword, unlike the rapier, was generally used as a military weapon, the cage around the hilt offering enhanced protection of the users hand. The design was developed during the 16th century, rising to popularity in the 17th century, and remaining widespread throughout the 18th when it was favoured by heavy cavalry
